Insurance for Renting Out Your Campervan

Before you can welcome your first Quirky Campers hirers, you will need to make sure your campervan is properly insured for your customers.

As the campervan owner, you are responsible for arranging and maintaining the correct insurance. Quirky Campers does not provide insurance to owners and cannot purchase or set up a policy on your behalf. However, we can explain the available options and point you towards insurers that understand campervan hire.

What insurance do I need?

To rent out your campervan through Quirky Campers, you will need:

  • Self-drive hire insurance covering every customer who rents your campervan
  • Insurance covering your own use of the campervan, that is compatible with the booking conditions used by Quirky Campers
  • Breakdown cover that also covers your hirers

A standard personal campervan policy will not cover your vehicle while it is being rented to paying customers. You will therefore need specialist self-drive hire insurance.

There are two main ways to arrange your cover:

Option 1: Annual self-drive hire insurance

An annual self-drive hire policy covers your campervan for customer hires throughout the policy year.

This insurance policy covers you as the named driver, as well as potential customers that rent your campervan.

Annual cover may suit you if:

  • You expect to accept regular bookings
  • You want to keep the admin between bookings to a minimum
  • You would prefer to arrange your main insurance once for the year
  • You want greater flexibility when accepting short-notice bookings

Annual self-drive hire policies are currently available from providers including Alan Boswell and Sterling, who also offer breakdown insurance as part of their package.

Option 2: Personal campervan insurance + daily self-drive hire insurance (Pay-as-you-go Insurance)

Instead of purchasing an annual self-drive hire policy, you can keep your standard campervan insurance policy (ie. Social, Domestic and Pleasure policy) for your personal use and arrange separate self-drive hire insurance for each booking.

This is sometimes referred to as daily or pay-per-hire insurance, and is purchased after once you receive a booking, and your insurer then bills you directly for the days you require insurance.

Daily cover may suit you if:

  • You are testing campervan hire for your first season
  • You do not want to commit to the cost of an annual policy
  • You are comfortable arranging cover before every hire

This option involves more admin. You must arrange and pay for the self-drive hire cover before each customer collects your campervan.

Your personal campervan insurer must also know that you intend to rent out the vehicle and must allow you to use separate self-drive hire insurance. Do not assume that every standard campervan policy permits this.

How much does insurance cost?

There is no single price for campervan hire insurance. Your quote may be affected by:

  • The campervan’s age and value
  • Where the campervan is kept
  • Your age and driving experience
  • Your claims and conviction history
  • The number and age of named drivers

Annual self-drive hire insurance normally involves a larger upfront annual payment but can become more cost-effective if you accept regular bookings. Daily insurance has a lower initial commitment, but the cost applies to every individual hire.

Current Pricing:

  • Alan Boswell annual self-drive hire policy: approximately £1,450 to £3,000 per year
  • Sterling annual self-drive hire policy: tailored quote with no set price
  • Daily self-drive hire insurance: varies according to the length of the booking
  • Daily self-drive hire insurance: varies according to the length of the booking:
    • Initial charge: £10 per booking +
    • 1 day: £39.61 per night
    • 2–5 days: £21.73-£26.20 per night
    • 6–9 days: £20.54–£21.73 per night
    • 10–14 days: £20.49–£24.13 per night
    • An additional charge may apply when daily cover is requested within 24 hours of a hire

These figures should only be used as a guide. The insurer will calculate the final premium using the details of you, your campervan and how you plan to rent it out.

How does insurance work for customers?

Insurance is included within the rental fee customers pay when they book a campervan through Quirky Campers. This means:

  • Customers should not be charged a separate insurance fee
  • Customers cannot use their own insurance instead
  • You should account for your insurance costs when setting your campervan’s nightly rate

Offering insurance as part of the total hire price gives customers a clearer price without an additional insurance charge appearing later in the booking process.

Breakdown cover:

Every campervan listed for hire with Quirky Campers must have breakdown cover that protects customers while the vehicle is on hire. Personal roadside assistance does not necessarily cover a vehicle being used for hire, so you must check that your policy specifically includes hirers and rental use.

Breakdown cover may be available:

  • As an addition to your annual self-drive hire policy
  • Through a separate business breakdown policy (eg. RAC Business) alongside daily insurance

Check any restrictions carefully. These may include limits relating to the campervan’s weight, length, age or licence category.

Driver restrictions and excesses

Each insurer sets its own driver eligibility criteria.

For Alan Boswell, the insurance criteria is as follows, all customers are covered as standard if they meet the below criteria:

  • Are aged between 23 and 75
  • Have held a UK or EU driving licence for at least 2 years
  • Have no more than 2 driving convictions in total, with no conviction worth more than 3 points
  • Have had no more than 1 claim in the past 3 years

Frequently asked questions

Can Quirky Campers arrange my insurance?

No. As the vehicle owner, you must choose, purchase and maintain your own insurance policy. Quirky Campers can explain the general requirements and share details of potential providers, but it cannot arrange insurance on your behalf

Can a customer use their own insurance?

No. Insurance must be provided as part of the customer’s campervan booking and arranged through the insurance option selected by the owner.

Can I charge customers separately for insurance?

No. Your advertised nightly rate should already account for the cost of providing the required insurance. Customers should not be asked to pay a separate insurance charge.

Do I need breakdown cover?

Yes. Your breakdown policy must cover the campervan while it is being driven by the hirer.

Is daily insurance charged once per booking or once per day?

Daily self-drive hire insurance is arranged separately for each booking, but its price is normally calculated using the number of rental days. Alan Boswell’s current daily insurance pricing structure is listed below:

Daily SDH charge (per booking not per day): £10

  • 1 day: £39.61 per night
  • 2–5 days: £21.73-£26.20 per night
  • 6–9 days: £20.54–£21.73 per night
  • 10–14 days: £20.49–£24.13 per night

What happens if I receive a last-minute booking?

Owners with annual cover are normally already insured for eligible hires. Owners using daily insurance must arrange cover before collection, and the provider may charge an additional fee for requests made at short notice.

Can customers take my campervan to Europe?

This would depend on your policy. Normally, you will need to opt in to allow your campervan to travel to the EU.
